I visited Greenleaf VC in September, and found the experience to be very warm, Spirit-filled and God-honoring. The congregation is made up of mostly young adults and couples, with quite a few babies in arms. As I entered the school where the church currently meets, I was warmly greeted by a number of people. I didn't realize that one of them was Angela, a co-pastor until she opened the service with announcements and prayer. There are obviously small home groups that meet mid-week and would account for the camaraderie I observed between people.
The worship was marvelous, a good mix of percussion and strings (cello) with a strong female vocalist. No "show" here; it was apparent that all the musicians were fully engaged in praise and worship. As a 55+, I appreciated that there were "seasoned" people on the music team, as well as a few in the congregation.
Rodger did a remarkable job of preaching on a difficult subject - "Marriage is for Sex." He opened with the title of a recent Time Magazine article, "Is Monogamy Over?" Our sexuality is deeply in question in our culture. Can one have sexual intimacy apart from a committed relationship? A quote by Andy Stanley sums up what I also believe to be true: "Intimacy is fueled by exclusivity." Rodger went on to talk about sex as part of God's good creation, fostering oneness and "pushing the envelope of communication." In spite of an uncomfortable topic (and there were many titters heard during the sermon), Rodger used humor and a light touch to broach the subject. He ended with an encouragement to married couples to "do it." And the response was overwhelmingly positive! I was sorry to miss "Sex is for Marriage" the following week (today).
If you are looking for a warm, spirit-filled congregation I would highly recommend that you investigate this church. It has a new feel, but is actually 8 years old. You will experience a refreshingly honest outlook and preaching with great depth and insight.Added September 02, 2016 by Katharine Luckett
